Daughter 3

Ants on the walls. Her eyes, unable yet to focus at such a distance, saw them only as one dark undulating mass. Like oil.

The gardener had disturbed a nest on the roof while clipping back ivy. In search of another home they might have traveled anywhere carrying their swollen larvae aloft. Good mothers all to those milky sacks of cells. Blind babies.

The swarm came to the edge of the blanket. There was the soft vibration of thousands of tiny parts in motion. She rolled onto the backs of millions and they carried her a few inches before a giggle erupted from the tickle of their touch.

She was not old enough to be afraid of ants, gardeners, ivy, or anything else.
